With time and patience, the mulberry leaf becomes a silk gown – Ancient Chinese Proverb.
In our last article on Silk, we wrote about its history and about how its lustre and finish had made it a popular fabric among the royal.
Here, we’d like to talk about the different kinds of silks you will find among our collections.
Our collections at Taruni include raw silk, chanderi, taffeta and satin.
Raw Silk:
Raw Silk (not be confused with noil silk) is produced by using untreated fine thread and uneven thread reeled from two or more entangled cocoons. This creates tightly-woven yardage with a highly-lustrous surface. As it can easily be woven with differing colors of threads, it includes florals and intricate, intrinsic designs.
Chanderi Silk:
Chanderi Silk, which is amongst the best known handloom clusters, occupies a special place because of its centuries old weaving specialty of producing finely textured fabrics of silk and cotton embellished with zari woven work, and more specifically because of its saris that have been patronized by royalty.
Taffeta Silk:
Silk Taffeta, whose name originated from the Persian word for twisted woven, is a fabric that continues to reign supreme in the world of silk. Soft with a muted luster and slight ribbing, taffeta is a flat fabric with an unmistakable rustle. It is either a high-end natural fabric or weaved with rayon fibres.
Satin:
Characterized by the typical weave that produces a highly glossy surface and a dull back, satin is also weaved out of long silk fibres. It makes for a great fabric for evening party wear.
